SOPHIA BUSH READY TO CHALLENGE SCARLETT JOHANSSON FOR BARAK

By Angela Carson

What will Michelle Obama think about this one?  Will this be a Hollywood catfight?  Much ado was made when it was leaked out that A-list buxom actress Scarlett Johansson of the "Yes, we can" video reportedly had the private e-mail address of presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama. Scarlett Johansson might now have some competition from pint-sized hottie Sophia Bush of "One Tree Hill" fame.

When asked by OK! Magazine recently, "Are you dating anyone now," the stunning little brunette told the magazine, "The only two men I have time for are Barack Obama and my trainer!  Those are the closest I come to relationships."  How many of the Hollywood babes will be chasing after Obama if he wins the White House?

Obama tried to calm down the whole Marilyn Monroe - John F Kennedy comparisons that were already picking up steam by calling it a misunderstanding and blaming his assistant, a man named Reggie Love for what he deemed as an electronic mix up.  Obama claimed it was only one "thank-you" e-mail and then it was blown out of proportion.

Now with the crush that Sophia Bush has on Barack Obama will we be looking at another Bill Clinton type Hollywood infatuation with the Commander in Chief only with younger and prettier actresses?

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Michaela McManus, who had a recurring role on "One Tree Hill," has joined the cast of NBC's crime drama "Law & Order: SVU" as the new assistant district attorney.

She replaces Diane Neal, who departed at the end of last season after five years. TV Guide's Web site reported in April that Neal told the show's crew that she had been fired.

"Law & Order: SVU" begins its 10th season in the fall. McManus is best known for playing Lindsey Strauss, Chad Michael Murray's literary editor, on the CW's "One Tree Hill."

BELIEFNET.COM INTERVIEW WITH HILARIE BURTON

By Paul O'Donnell

Hilarie Burton is only a little older than 22-year-old Peyton Sawyer, her character on the teen drama "One Tree Hill," but in conversation, Burton speaks with a wisdom, and a vision for her future, that would be a credit to someone much older—those she still calls "grownups." Chalk it up to her early start in show-business—at an age when most kids are watching the clock in Calculus, Burton was already a VJ on MTV. Or to running your own film production company while starring in films like the Christian thriller "The List," just out on DVD, and the upcoming screen version of Sue Monk Kidd's "Secret Life of Bees." Burton herself might say her taking the long view has to do with her Southern upbringing, and her belief in God.

For someone with a big role on a hit TV series, "The List" might be called an unusual project. What convinced you to sign onto a Christian indie film?

Partly I wanted to play Jo Johnston for my fans who know me from "One Tree Hill." My character on the show does some things I would not recommend. So it was nice to play someone closer to who I am. And for me, it was important because, growing up, you never saw Christian ladies in movies or on TV. Even today, when you read Christian stories or you watch Christian movies, the characters don't talk like normal people. They don't use slang. They're very formal. It was great to play a contemporary Christian and have her not be a geek. It's almost taboo. Playing a Christian woman is so much weirder than playing a drug addict or a friendly prostitute or any of those things.

Did you know that it was a Christian film when you read for it?

I did. I grew up in the United Methodist Church, and church was always a very big part of my growing up. After leaving my hometown, it became very hard to find a--I don't want to say a religious community, but a spiritual community. It wasn't until I worked on this film that I really met like-minded people. And to find a group of people who were working within the business, and also playing by their own rules and very successfully, it was very inspiring for me. Gary [Wheeler, director of "The List"] inspired me to start my own production company down here in Wilmington, which we call Southern Gothic, and we've already started on our first project, a dark comedy that's very human, along the lines of "Little Miss Sunshine" or "Juno," about a young guy who gets cancer.

Do you feel like it's easier to be open about having a life of faith in show-business?

Well, it's easier for me because I live and work in Wilmington, N.C., in a very family-oriented film community. That's not to say that, if I went out to Hollywood, I'd be bashful about my convictions. I've always been very vocal about my religion. It's a big part of who I am. I remember being told that part of your job as a Christian is testifying to that. You could be Christian all you want, but if you hide out in your room and keep it a secret, what good does that do God? I mean, it's a hard path to figure out, because you don't want to throw it in peoples' face. But I want the kids who watch "One Tree Hill" to know that it's all pretend, and that the person at the core of that character values morals, honor and things like that. You want to inspire them to look beyond what is superficial and try to find that greater thing.

The South—its uniqueness and traditions—play a big part in "The List." And it seems to be a theme with you. You were raised in Virginia—was it that kind of old South milieu?

I'm from northern Virginia, but I grew up next to the West Virginia border, so it was hills and farmland. We had that sense of adventure you get from growing up around old farmhouses and lazy, rolling hills, you know? That's something that translates into "The List," that love of what's ancient. It's funny, though: I was the southern kid on the set, but my character was the only one that wasn't from the South.

KEEPING THE FAITH WITH 'ONE TREE HILL'S' HILARIE BURTON

By Troy Rogers

In a day and age when the world is infatuated with the scandalous side of celebrity and the misadventures of some of today's young female stars, One Tree Hill actress Hilarie Burton is a breath of fresh air. In fact, she's living proof that rising female stars can provide hope to those in need within their own generation through strength and positive messages. Although TV fans know Burton as the brooding and artistic teen harlot, Peyton Sawyer, on One Tree Hill, Hilarie recently got the chance to show a completely different side of herself next to Malcolm McDowell and Chuck Carrington in the southern faith based thriller, The List, which is now available on DVD (as of June 10).

Much like her character in The List, Hilarie Burton found herself on a journey of exploration that allowed her to reaffirm her own faith and belief in a higher power. On Monday, Hilarie phoned in to The Deadbolt HQ to talk about her time on The List, her views on faith and what it means to be a Christian girl in Hollywood, how she navigates the real world evils of the industry, how she's different than her character on One Tree Hill, her USO tour of Guantanamo Bay ... AND, whether Dan will be returning to the series and if we should all have faith that Peyton Sawyer could be making wedding plans this season.

THE DEADBOLT: So I guess the best question to start with is, did you have faith The List would finally be released on DVD?

HILARIE BURTON: Oh yeah, that was never a question. Gary Wheeler is so good at his job. Not only is he a phenomenal on-set leader, but he understands how to maintain his integrity and his ethics in a business that can be kind of seedy. So I think anybody who meets him and encounters him automatically recognizes that. So I never doubted for a second that he wouldn’t go out there and sell this movie.

THE DEADBOLT: Is it tough to be one of the 50 Sexiest Women and still be religious?

BURTON: [laughs] What? Where did that come from? I didn’t know about that. Is that your own personal list?

THE DEADBOLT: No, but you’ve been on a few.

BURTON: A couple of them - sexy is as sexy does. I think I went through a very awkward stage growing up. I had three brothers and every girl likes to say she’s a tomboy because they think that’s what boys like to hear. I was painfully tomboyish for awhile and it wasn’t something to brag about [laughs]. So I think once you’ve experienced that level of awkwardness, any kind of accolade about your physical appearance is always just kind of unsettling. So I don’t pay attention to that.

THE DEADBOLT: I guess it would be kind of weird.

BURTON: Yeah, it’s totally weird. I met a guy from Europe recently that was talking about how gorgeous women were - gorgeous, gorgeous - and I was like, "Listen buddy, here in the States woman don’t want to hear they’re pretty. Every once in a while, maybe, but American women like to hear they’re capable and really smart. That’s what keeps us going. Tell me how smart I am." [laughs]

THE DEADBOLT: So what was it exactly that spoke to you about The List?

BURTON: For me it was the opportunity to play a Christian woman that wasn’t a geek. There’s that stereotype that the bible-toting Christian woman is a dork, and that’s a stereotype I grew up with and never really agreed with, and so I was very excited about the opportunity to show a different side to my fan base. I’ve got impressionable teenage girls who watch One Tree Hill and I wanted them to know you can be cool and still be devout and still be strong in your faith, and you don’t have to keep it a secret either. People are like, "Wow, you’re pretty vocal about your faith." And I’m like, "Yeah, well, that’s part of it. That’s part of being a Christian, you have to announce it." It’s not a secret.

THE DEADBOLT: Since there's such a strong sense of faith in the film, why do you think it's so strong in the south?

BURTON: I don’t know that it’s stronger in the south. My mother’s family comes from Iowa and Minnesota and they’re some of the most devout people and their entire communities are super devout. I think, given the climate and how warm it is, people get out and mingle more. So maybe there are more arenas to get out and talk about it, to go to church. I think church in the south is - it’s our history, our tradition, it’s where we go to see our neighbors. That’s not to say that that’s all entirely wholesome, half the time you’re just there to check out other people’s outfits. But I think it’s so ingrained in the southern culture that there are just more arenas to talk about it perhaps.

THE DEADBOLT: When connecting to your character, Jo, were you faced with a similar questioning process of understanding her in the same way she had to understand her own future?

BURTON: I think for me, in playing the part of Jo, a large part of it was that I’ve been playing a character on One Tree Hill that I, as a younger person, did have a lot in common with. Peyton Sawyer was very similar to how I was in high school. So being able to play someone closer to me was important. And I also wasn’t lost, but searching for a way to use the leverage I gained on One Tree Hill for good, you know. I mean, you can go to all of the fashion shows you want, go to all of the parties, and get in all of the magazines and take pictures, you can do that all you want, but unless you’re using your status for good it’s kind of pointless. So getting to play Jo, I knew that it was going to bring my fan base to an entirely different genre, which was important to me. But also, I knew I was going to have an opportunity to do things like this, like promote the film and be asked about my faith. When I do stuff for One Tree Hill, I don’t get posed those types of questions. If I’m going to share any part of my personal life with my public, I think attesting to my faith and what I believe in is probably one of the only valid things I should be sharing. ...READ FULL INTERVIEW

SOPHIA BUSH WAS NOT READY FOR MARRIAGE

Sophia Bush finally spoke out about her split from fellow actor Jon Foster.

The 25-year-old One Tree Hill star told Us Weekly Monday that she and Foster “broke up, like, a year ago… I am single. We are really good friends. We keep in touch, and we love each other to death… You can love somebody, and not be in love with them, and I think that was a really valuable lesson. We weren’t ready to get married, but it definitely doesn’t mean we don’t care about each other.”

The actress, who had a 20-month-long marriage to costar Chad Michael Murray, added, “The only two men I have time for are Barack Obama and my trainer. So those are my relationships… I love that [Obama] is the first politician who doesn’t feel like a politician. Senator Obama is the one person who’s saying, ‘We can change everything — but it can’t just be me, and it can’t just be you.’”

SINGER GETS BOOST FROM STINT ON 'ONE TREE HILL'

By Kristie Rearick
krearick@sjnewsco.com

Kate Voegele has had quite a whirlwind of a year. The singer/songwriter from Cleveland, Ohio has found musical success at only 21 years old. From appearing on the hit CW TV show "One Tree Hill" as a singer to hearing her songs played on such shows as "Ghost Whisperer" and MTV's "The Hills," this young star has been on a "cool adventure," so far.

"It's been an insane year," Voegele said in a phone conversation from Cincinnati where she was preparing for a live performance. "I've been all over the place ... sometimes I get to a place and I say 'Oh my God, where am I?'"

The talented singer always had an interest in music growing up. Her father played the guitar and influenced her to pick it up as well.

"I grew up in a musical family, so I was exposed to all that stuff when I was little kid. I started playing guitar when I was a freshman in high school .. but it took me a while to decide to do this as a career. At first I was just doing it for fun," Voegele said.

Voegele was named an "An Artist to Watch in 2008" by Billboard. Her debut album, "Don't Look Away," had a huge increase in sales after her guest appearance on One Tree Hill where she sang some of the songs from the album. She will be performing -- in support of her album, Don't Look Away -- at The Fillmore at TLA in Philadelphia on Monday, June 16 with British pop singer Natasha Bedingfield and The Veronicas.
Voegele didn't think she would get the part on One Tree Hill. She went into the audition thinking it was a long shot at best.

"I never had any professional acting experience," Voegele said. "I sang at the audition and read my lines. When I was finished they said 'Kate, you could do this for a living, you know.' I thought that was pretty awesome."

The show gave her the exposure she needed and she describes it as a great experience. She enjoyed working on the show and felt welcome by the cast and crew right away. Voegele played Mia, a young artist not unlike herself trying to make it in the music business.

"She was such a great character to play. I think the audience really identified with her," Voegele said.

With so many things going on in her musical career, Voegele had to put college on hold for a while, but recently she decided to study online with the University of Phoenix to get a degree in psychology.

"I went to college for two years and I had to stop because of my career. I was kind of bummed out about it because I love studying and going to school," Voegele said. "This school makes it flexible to be a student. I'm able to work around my schedule."

The singer, who writes all of her own songs, was influenced by singers Alanis Morissette and Sheryl Crow early on because of the "intelligently written words" in their music.

"Listening to them made me want to write that kind of music ... mainstream music with a lot of heart. I think it's really important to have words that people can really relate to," Voegele said.

And what's next for this talented musician after her amazing, breakthrough year?
"I will always mainly be a musician ... I can't picture not doing it," she said. "But if something else came up in the acting world I would definitely do it again."

If you go: Kate Voegele will perform at the Fillmore at the TLA on 334 South Street at 8 p.m. in Philadelphia with Natasha Bedingfield and The Veronicas. Tickets are $25. For tickets visit www.livenation.com

KATE VOEGELE MUSIC REVIEW

By HENRY LINDER, McCaskey

I'll admit it: I have mixed feelings about Kate Voegele. Kate Voegele is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and pianist from Bay Village, Ohio. "Don't Look Away," was released in May 2007 and re-released in January on MySpace Records. Her first and only album, "Don't Look Away," was released in May 2007 and re-released in January on MySpace Records, in addition to a special iTunes exclusive release in May.

A PR company press release describes Voegele as a "singer/songwriter" with "something truly distinctive to offer."

I must say, I'm impressed by the concept of Voegele being signed by MySpace Records, because of its implications: It suggests she has talent appreciated not just by music producers sitting in cushy chairs, trying to decide on the next big thing, but also by the listeners of music.

In other words, Voegele seems to have appeal to actual people, who've made her popular enough to be signed, so there must be a significant number of people who enjoy her music. (She may also be gaining that fan base after appearing in the role of Mia on The CW's "One Tree Hill.")

It's quite a feat (which is an understatement) to become popular through a social-networking site, and it's entirely plausible that you will disagree with me about Voegele's music.

Still, despite the hype about the music (which can be heard on myspace.com/katevoegele and bought on iTunes) and her evident popularity, I'm not a huge fan.

There's no denying Voegele's talent: She has a powerful voice, and the music on the album is tight and professional. (It's hard to tell who plays what on the CD — Voegele plays piano and guitar in addition to singing, but she also has a backup band comprised of bass, guitar and a slew of other instruments.)

"Don't Look Away" starts with "Chicago," which begins with a guitar melody, joined shortly by Voegele's vocals.

The music is sincere, but it gets mildly formulaic: Much of the rest of the album starts off with a lonely melody, then flows into vocals that build to a chorus before backing off for more verse.

Voegele's voice is the driver behind her music: The melodies, while at times catchy (such as on "Might Have Been," which features a memorable guitar opening and backing), can also blend together into an indistinguishable mush of background noise. "Facing Up," for instance, is driven almost entirely by Voegele's voice, with backing guitar and piano that require effort to notice.

Frankly, my two biggest criticisms are weak: The music doesn't sound very original, and it just doesn't grab me. Voegele is talented, but she's not doing anything special on her album.

The latter criticism may be due to preference on my part. I've never found myself drawn to music from Voegele's genre. And this is where the mixed feelings I mentioned at the beginning of this review come in: Knowing that Voegele is popular for reasons other than manipulation of audiences by record labels, and given her obvious and impressive talent, I have trouble writing off Voegele's music completely.

The songs are thoughtful, and I found myself liking songs like "Devil In Me," which is fun to listen to and features a pop chorus and guitars, or the fast-paced "One Way Or Another," which showcases Voegele's vocal power and features a wide range of instruments that work together to build up the song into a complete piece.

My recommendation is that you check out Voegele for yourself. The genres she blends are eclectic and far-reaching, and she's a talented musician.

I would recommend either buying some of her tracks or seeing her live — she's coming to Chameleon Club June 19.

NEW CHARACTER NEWS / GALLERY UPDATE

I found an interesting article on zap2it about a new character for season 6. The article is a few days old, but is still interesting nonetheless:

New Kid in Town: 'One Tree Hill's' sixth season will soon begin filming and with that comes word of a new character joining the show. I'm told that a 15-year-old foster kid, whom they're calling Samantha, will play a significant role this year. A source says she's a bit of a "Miss Sassy Pants," but will soften in subsequent episodes.

JAMES LAFFERTY TO STAR IN 'DONNIE DARKO' SEQUAL

"One Tree Hill" star James Lafferty will play a role in the upcoming film, "S. DARKO," a continuation of the Donnie Darko story, his publicist announced Monday. The Silver Nitrate/Newmarket film is in pre-production and will film in Los Angeles, according to the Internet Movie Database.

Other actors linked with the film are Justin Chatwin ("War of the Worlds"), Ed Westwick ("Gossip Girl"), Elizabeth Berkley ("Showgirls"), Briana Evigan ("Step Up 2: the Streets") and Daveigh Chase ("Big Love"). Chase plays Donnie's younger sister, Samantha, plagued by visions on a cross-country road trip.

Information about Lafferty's role was not released. The actor will begin filming the sixth season of "One Tree Hill" in Wilmington this month.

"Donnie Darko" starred Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal and earned a cult status among sci-fi fans after its 2001 release. It, too, had a connection to the Port City, with Wilmington's Beth Grant ("No Country for Old Men") playing a supporting role.

SOPHIA BUSH COMES CLEAN

(OK! Magazine) Soptyles event held at NYC’s Hammerstein Ballroom.

As lemon chicken and tuna tartar tacos are served, tunes including Rihanna’s Umbrella, Jesse McCartney’s Leavin’ and Leona LewisBleeding Love fill the air. Sophia struts up to the microphone.

“What’s come to the forefront of fashion and beauty products today is a trend toward our world becoming more accessible,” the raspy-voiced One Tree Hill star says. “You can see that with Sarah Jessica Parker’s Bitten line, and you can see that with these Tone products, that are wonderful for your skin. It’s chic, fashionable and affordable.”

Sophia and I sit down on white couches, where she is giddy about presenting the Tone Fashion Vision Award to Jolibe tonight. (She’s also giving him a check for $10,000!) What’s the key to her style?

“Always having fun with it,” the actress, 25, tells me. “Putting on something that makes you feel great, whether you’re in the mood to be casual and throw on jeans and a v-neck t-shirt, or you want to get done up and put on a dress and the heels and throw the hair up in bobby pins. Regardless of what it is, you’ve gotta feel good. If other people are pushing you into fashion decisions, I don’t think that’s the way to go. That’s why I generally choose to dress myself.”

What makes her feel comfortable?

“What makes me feel most comfortable is feeling like I’ve been taking care of my body. Having healthy skin is just as crucial as having the big white smile. I load up on my antioxidants, drinking green tea and taking my Omega 3 fish oils.”

What also makes her happy is being free and single after ending her marriage to One Tree Hill costar Chad Michael Murray in 2006 and two-year relationship with fellow actor Austin Nichols.

“I really like just enjoying my time in the moment,” she tells me. “Being in every day, not planning for tomorrow, not worrying about yesterday. It’s so lovely to just have time with my girlfriends and my family. But it’s really awkward to not be dating in Hollywood because whenever I get spotted anywhere with any of my guy friends, suddenly we’re madly in love or something. People misconstrue things so insanely. You realize you can’t win and you sort of have to let all that go and laugh about it at the end of the day.”

Upon leaving, I get a gift bag that includes Tone body wash in Exotic Fusions, Almond Milk and Sugar Glow, plus Almond Milk hand wash and Almond Milk body bars. All right!
